Martin Matheo: „Das #Zukunftsspiel“

Ich freue mich immer sehr, wenn Autoren auf mich aufmerksam werden und mich um Rezensionen bitten. Das öffnet nicht nur Augen für neue Werke und vielleicht noch wenig bekannte Autoren, sondern bietet auch Raum für Austausch und neue Entdeckungen und Inspirationen.

So geschehen beim Autor Martin Matheo, der mich via E-Mail kontaktierte. Da sich sein neuestes Werk mit dem Titel „Das #Zukunftsspiel“ natürlich auch mit selbiger beschäftigt und mich auch der Klappentext ansprach, freute ich mich natürlich über die Zusendung des Buches und begann zeitnah mit dem Lesen.

I am always really happy when authors find me online and contact me about reading their books and writing articles on my blog. This not only opens one’s eyes for new literary works and new authors, but also gets you excited for being in contact with them and making new discoveries and find new inspiration.

That is the way it went with Martin Matheo, an austrian author who contacted me via E-Mail. His newest work is titled „The #FutureGame“ (not officially, but I would translate it this way) and for sure it deals with some things already present now and makes the reader think about how we deal with some digital achievements and how they control us and our life. Also the short text on the back of the book caught my interest and made me want to read it.  

Vertrieben wird das Buch übrigens durch den österreichischen dip3 Verlag. Btw the book is distributed by dip3 publishing in Austria.

 Veronika will sich von ihrem untreuen Ehemann scheiden lassen – und prompt macht sie die Bekanntschaft von Aurora. Nun ist Aurora kein menschliches Wesen, sondern eine App, die – wie viele heutige auch – alles versprechen, um unser Leben einfacher zu machen und uns viele Entscheidungen abnehmen wollen. Bei Veronika beginnt die „Fangmasche“ mit einer Aurora-integrierten Dating-App, die natürlich zu dem Zeitpunkt wie gerufen kommt.

Veronika wants a divorce from her unfaithful husband – and soon she gets to know Aurora, which is not a human being, but an app which promises – like many others today too – to make our lives easy and save us from making decisions. Veronika is caught like many other single people too – via a Dating App which seems to be right on time in her life.

„‚Warum eigentlich nicht?‘, fragt Veronika sich leise, als sie die Neuzugänge mustert, welche ihr von der unlängst installierten Dating-App, zuckersüß und fast schon zum Anbeißen, direkt auf das Smartphone geliefert werden.“

So macht Veronika die Bekanntschaft von Matt, der eigentlich Mathias heißt, und der total begeistert von Aurora ist und über viel Wissen verfügt, welches er natürlich mit Veronika teilt und diese so noch mehr auf den Aurora-Trip bringt. Angefangen bei Infos und werbeähnlichen Floskeln über Persönlichkeitsentwicklung mittels der Better Life Company (so der Name des Betreibers von Aurora) bis hin zu finanziellen Anreizen durch das Anlocken und „Einfangen“ von neuen Spielern für die App…

So Veronika gets to know Matt – whose real name is Mathias, and who knows a lot about Aurora and is as fascinated with the app as other people. So he has an easy way to make Veronika not only fall for him, but also fall for the App and its seemingly making-life-easy-approach. Starting with information and sale-like talk about getting a better personality via the help of Better Life Company (which is the name of the company that released Aurora) to financial aspects with finding new players that will use Aurora and will better Veronikas financial life…

„Natürlich ausbezahlt in der hauseigenen Kryptowährung der BLC, dem Better Life Coin. Matt weiß, wenn die Währung erst einmal richtig in die Gänge kommt, dann sehen Dollar, Euro und Co richtig alt dagegen aus. Dann ist alles möglich.“

Langsam aber sicher verändert sich Veronika – aus Sicht ihrer besten Freundin Lisa – und beschäftigt sich immer mehr mit ihren digitalen Errungenschaften anstatt mit ihrem realen Leben. Sie beschafft Aurora immer mehr Mitspieler, verdient damit Better Life Coins und sieht sich schon am Ende ihrer finanziellen Nöte…

Soon Veronikas life changes – at least thats the thought of her best friend Lisa – and she gets more and more involved with her digital achievements than with her real life. She provides Aurora with more gamers, gets a good amount of Better Life Coins and seems to see the end of her financial hardships…

Doch mit der Zeit kommt auch Veronika dahinter, dass nicht alles in der digitalen Welt von Aurora Gold ist…

But when time flies by Veronika also finds out about the fact, that not everything in digital heaven is gold…

Nach und nach ändert sich auch ihr Familienleben mit Sohn Peter und dessen neuer Freundin, Johanna. Sie ist die Tochter von Veronikas neuem Schwarm John (der eigentlich Johann heißt), der bei der Better Life Company im Sicherheitsbereich arbeitet und sich ebenfalls in Veronika verliebt hat. Und er weiß mehr über die BLC, als gut für ihn ist…

And soon also her family life with son Peter and his new girlfriend Johanna changes. Johanna is the daughter of Veronikas newest love interest John – whose real name is actually Johann and who works for Better Life Company in the security division… and has fallen for Veronika. And John knows more about BLC than is good for him…

„Wie würde unser Business wohl aussehen, wenn die Leute die ganze Wahrheit hinter der „We make life easy for you“-Fassade kennen würden. […] Sie würden ausrasten.“

Und dann passiert der – für die zu digital-angefixten Menschen gefühlte – Super-GAU: Aurora ist down! Von jetzt auf gleich nicht mehr erreichbar!

And then the worst thing ever happens – at least for too-digital-living people: Aurora is down! Not available!

Ab diesem Zeitpunkt hat der Roman von Martin Matheo leichte Züge einer Verschwörungsgeschichte, lebt von den schmutzigen Details die diejenigen, die sie kennen, gegen Aufnahme in den Zeugenschutz weitergeben – ohne sicher zu sein, dass die Empfänger positiv mit ihnen umgehen…

From  this moment on the novel of Martin Matheo has slightly sights of a conspiracy novel, lives of the possibility of dirty details that the people who know them trade in for security and getting inside witness protection – without being too sure that the person on the receiving end will treat the information with all due respect…

Und irgendwann ist Aurora zurück – mit den riesengroßen Worten „WE ARE BACK“ – und neuen chinesischen Eigentümern…

And in a little while Aurora is back – with the big words written at the screen: „WE ARE BACK“ – and Aurora has a new home: it was bought by chinese investors…

„Das Zukunftsspiel“ hält uns einen Spiegel vor und zeigt auf, wie leicht manipulierbar Menschen sind und welchen Einfluss Apps und andere digitale Spielereien schon jetzt auf unser Leben haben.

Was nehmen wir aus der Geschichte mit? Hoffentlich – für diejenigen, die sich noch nicht so mit Zukunftsmusik beschäftigt haben – eine gewisse Portion Skepsis, natürlich verbunden mit Neugier und dem positiven Veränderungswillen.

„The FutureGame“ lets us see behind the mirror and shows us how easily humans can be manipulated and how big the influence of Apps and other digital services is as of right now in our lives.

What is it that we take from this story? Hopefully – for those who aren’t working in the future-business – a good portion of scepticism connected with a positive will for change and some curiosity.
