~ Jill Tomlinson: „The Owl who was afraid of the dark“ ~

Wenn man in London unterwegs ist, kommt man zwangsläufig nicht daran vorbei, mindestens ein Buch mit nach Hause zu nehmen. Meistens werden es erfahrungsgemäß mehr!

If you are in London you definitely won’t leave without taking at least one book with you. Most of the time it will be more than one!

So when I visited London last year I definitely took some time to look through some bookish stores. And I had something to take home with me, f.e. Tom Mitchell’s „The Penguin Lessons“ and one or more guides of museums 🙂

Auch letztes Jahr habe ich wieder einige Buchläden unsicher gemacht und natürlich auch einige Bücher mit nach Hause genommen: so z.B. Tom Mitchell’s „The Penguin Lessons“ und den ein oder anderen Museumsführer 🙂

Und da ich ein auch gut gemachte Kinderbücher sehr interessant finde – und noch dazu Eulenvögel sehr mag – machte sich auch dieses kleine Büchlein auf in eine neue Heimat:

Die Autorin, Jill Tomlinson (*1931), wollte eigentlich nie eine Schriftstellerin werden. Sie wollte ihre Stimme trainieren, um später eine Opernsängerin zu werden. Allerdings kam ihr die eigene Gesundheit – oder deren Nicht-Vorhandensein – in die Quere. Sie nahm dann Journalismus-Kurse und entschied sich, Bücher für Kinder zu schreiben. Ihre Tiergeschichten werden von vielen geliebt. Die Autorin, deren positive Geschichten viele Generationen begleiten, starb im Alter von 45 Jahren im Jahre 1976. Sie litt an Multipler Sklerose.

Jill Tomlinson (*1931) never intended to be a professional writer. She wanted to be an opera singer – but her health didn’t let her pursue her dream. So he took courses at journalism and later decided that she wanted to write stories for children.  Her animal-centered stories are loved by many generations and always have a positive outcome. Sadly the author died in 1976 following her affection with multiple sclerosis (MS).

Worum geht es in dem Buch?

Plop ist eine kleines Eulenjunges, genauer gesagt eine kleine Schleiereule. Mit einem kleineren Problem: Plop hat Angst vor der Dunkelheit.

„In fact he was exactly the same as every baby barn owl that has ever been – except for one thing. Plop was afraid of the dark.

‚You can’t be afraid of the dark,‘ said his mummy. ‚Owls are never afraid of the dark.‘

‚This one is,‘ Plop said.

‚But Owls are night birds,‘ she said.

Plop looked down at his toes. ‚I don’t want to be a night bird,‘ he mumbled. ‚I want to be a day bird.'“

Also macht sich Plop auf die Suche, um mehr über die Dunkelheit und die Nacht zu erfahren. Er begegnet den unterschiedlichsten Menschen – und auch Tiere, die ihm alle erzählen, warum sie die Nacht und die Dunkelheit mögen.

So Plop decides to go out – in daylight – and find out what other people like about the night and darkness. He gets to know different kinds of people – and also animals, old and young, who tell them about whats fascinating about the darkness and the night.

Die Geschichte von Plop ist niedlich geschrieben, mit wunderschönen Zeichnungen garniert und definitiv sehr gut geeigent zum Vorlesen – und auch selbst lesen.

The story of Plop is really nicely written with wonderful drawings and is definitely good for being read to young kids – and for reading it yourself.

Jill Tomlinson hat noch mehrere Bücher geschrieben, die alle sehr interessant und lehrreich sind. Ich bin mal gespannt, welches mich das nächste Mal aus England begleitet.

Jill Tomlinson wrote many other animal-books which are really nice and I am definitely curious as of which one will be accompanying me the next time.
