Im Februar machte ich literarische Bekanntschaft mit der Geschichte von Yosef Şimşek und besuchte bald darauf die Leipziger Buchmesse – nur ein Highlight meines Jahres.
Im Mai zog Oobi-Ooobi in den Zoo Leipzig ein und ich bin noch immer total begeistert von „unserem“ Koala.
In February I read the story of Yosef Şimşek and visited the Leipzig Book Fair – just one of the Highlights of my year.
In May we welcomed Oobi-Ooobi at the Zoo Leipzig and I am still totally crazy for this loveable animal.
Ein weiteres Lese-Highlight meines Jahres war „Our Song“ von Dani Atkins – ein Buch, das mich zum lachen und zum weinen gebracht hat.
Natürlich gab es auch noch die Highlights aus dem Bereich „Ausflüge“. Dieses Jahr zählten die unterschiedlichsten Besuche von Tierparks, u.a. Hirschfeld und Eisenberg dazu. Auch dem Magdeburger Zoo stattete ich einen Besuch ab.
In den folgenden Monaten ging es weiter mit Abenteuern: ein Urlaub in London – die letzten Artikel dazu folgen im Neuen Jahr :-), weitere Lesehighlights von Marion Schreiner und Iona Grey, von Tom Michell und Annis Bell und erst kürzlich das wunderbare Buch „Three Dark Crowns“ von Kendare Black.

Some wonderful christmas movies followed – together with „Fuller House“ which definitely brought warm feelings and I am really excited for its third season.

Das größte Highlight war mein persönliches Vor-Weihnachten: der Besuch der Comic Con in Dortmund, wo ich wunderbare Menschen treffen konnte und eine interessante Zeit hatte.
The biggest Highlight so far was my personal pre-christmas present: a visit to the Comic Con in Dortmund, where I met lovely people and got to have an amazing time.
Nun heißt es abwarten, was 2017 so bringt…

Letztes Wochenende war es soweit und ich hab mir mein verfrühtes Weihnachtsgeschenk gegönnt: ein ausgedehntes Wochenende in Dortmund mit dem Besuch der German Comic Con und des Dortmunder Zoos.
Last weekend was the weekend when I got to spend a long weekend visiting the German Comic Con in Dortmund and the Zoo of this city.

Geplant habe ich diesen Aufenthalt schon eine Weile im Voraus – ist ja auch günstiger in Bezug auf die preislichen Dinge einer Reise.
Da es ein vorzeitiges Weihnachtspräsent war, hab ich mir natürlich auch einiges gegönnt: ein VIP-Ticket (welches sich doch sehr gelohnt hat), einige schöne Mitbringsel von der Messe (ja, darunter zählen auch Autogramme und Fotos) und den ganz allgemeinen Luxus eines langen Wochenendes auswärts.
I really planned this thing a while ago – which is definitely a good thing when you look at the prices.
Since this was an early christmas gift I surely spent something in it: f.e. a VIP-Ticket (which surely was worth it), some souvenirs to bring with me (yeah I count autographs and photographs here) and the general luxury of being in another city for a long weekend.

Als ich nach einer angenehmen Zugfahrt (ja, das soll es auch geben) in Dortmund ankam, suchte ich mein Hotel auf, machte es mir gemütlich und bereitete mich auf mein Wochenende vor.
Für manche Besucher ist bei einer Comic Con der „Comic“-Aspekt das Wichtige und die anwesenden Stargäste nur der Zusatz. Für mich war es definitiv genau anders herum: die eingeladenen Stargäste waren den Besuch wert – und das Drumherum mit Cosplay, Comic, Manga etc. die Zugabe.
After my arrival in Dortmund (after a nice train ride) I went to my hotel, relaxed and got through my plannings for the weekend.
For some visitors at a Comic Con the aspect of „comic“ is the important thing and the guests (actors) being there just another add on. For me it was the other way around: the invited actors being my main reason for visiting the Comic Con and the add on being the things related to Cosplay, Comic, Manga etc.
Als VIP-Ticket-Besitzer darf man ja eine Stunde vorher in die Hallen hinein und so hatte ich am Freitag in Ruhe Zeit, alles durchzuschauen, mir meine Autogramme zu holen, mit den Schauspielern in Ruhe zu reden – ohne dass eine Schlange hinter mir wartet – und den ersten Messetag zu genießen.
Samstag war der Vorteil des VIP-Tickets noch deutlicher. Erst hatte ich mich ja doch gefragt, ob es überhaupt sinnvoll war – aber wenn man dann die Schlange vor dem Eingang mit den Tages- und Wochenendtickets gesehen hat – da bin ich doch sehr glücklich zum VIP-Eingang gelaufen und zur Garderobe gegangen. Langes Warten mag ja im Sommer noch ganz angenehm sein, aber bei kühleren Temperaturen da lob ich mir einen schnellen Einlass in die Westfalenhallen.
Sonntag war es dann nicht ganz so voll, aber auch da war es einfach angenehmer, ein VIP-Ticket zu haben. Ein kleiner Luxus. Man gönnt sich ja sonst nichts.
When having a VIP-Ticket you are allowed to enter an hour earlier than the rest of the visitors. So on friday I had loads of time finding my way through the halls and get to know everything, get a nice talk with the actors and get my autographs. That was especially fine when you think about the possibility of a longer talk with the guests than just to say a few words with people standing and waiting in line after you. So this friday for me was definitely a good day and I got to spend a relaxed time at the Con.
On Saturday I was definitely more aware of the benefit of the VIP-Ticket. With Friday being a quiet day I was thinking that maybe my purchase of the VIP-Ticket wasn’t a good idea – but I was definitely assured of it when I saw the long long long line waiting either for their ticket or waiting to get in. And I was allowed to get easily access to the Westfalenhallen and leave the crowd outside. It’s definitely another thing waiting outside when its summer – but with colder temperatures I was really happy to be able to get inside and have nicer temperatures.
On Sunday it was less crowded but definitely a good choice to have early access. A nice little luxury. Sometimes you gotta spoil yourself.
Auch mein gedanklicher „Zusatz“ der Cosplayer, Comic- und Manga-Dinge war sehr interessant zu beobachten. Hier mal ein kleiner Einblick:

Sicherlich gab es auch einige weniger erfreute Stimmen auf der Con: über die Organisation kann man sich streiten. Es war meine erste Con, deshalb habe ich keine Vergleiche, aber einige Dinge haben auch mir Stirnrunzeln beschert:
Sure there were some not so impressed voices at the con: some were upset about the organisation but that’s a point I can not relate to. It was my first convention so I can’t compare to other cons, but there are some small points I have to admit:
Es war gut, dass die Photoshoots in einer eigenen Halle stattfanden. Das soll wohl letztes Jahr nicht so gut gelaufen sein. Allerdings hier das Manko: Es wäre schön, wenn man genauer Bescheid wüsste, wo man sich für welches Shoot anstellt. Ständig musste man fragen, ob die Schlange in der man steht auch die richtige ist.
==> Das ist jetzt kein großes Manko, aber es hätte einiges angenehmer gemacht.
It was really good that the photoshoots were taking place in a different hall. That was – I heard from a few people – an advantage to last year. But there is a little thing I have to mention: it would be great to have at least a clear focus on which line is waiting for which photoshoot. That was a bit confusing at times. Would have been better to have clear marked lines.
==> This isn’t that bad, but it would have been easier to find your photoshoot.

Die Schlange für die Autogramme und Photoshoots (DH+KITT) von David Hasselhoff waren ja – und das hätte man als Veranstalter wissen müssen – nicht gerade kurz. Bei den Autogrammen hat man es gut gelöst und immer in 100er Schritten Nummern vergeben, damit das Gedränge nicht überhand nahm. Beim Photoshoot allerdings gab es eine wirklich „gruselige“ Schlange, die sich – wie auch das Tier – hin und her gewunden hat und man Mühe hatte, das Ende zu finden. Auch hier wäre Nummernvergabe oder ein Shooting in einem anderen Hallenteil besser gewesen.
==> Wenn man namhafte Stars einlädt, dann muss man auf Ansturm gefasst sein.
The line for the autographs and photoshoots (DH + KITT) of David Hasselhoff have been – and you should be aware of that as an organiser of a Con – not the shortest. At the autograph-line they had the good solution to give out numbers in steps of 100. That reduced the crowd a little bit. But that wasn’t the thing with the photoshoot. There you had a really weird line that goes – like the animal – here and there and you had a hard time finding the end of it. I guess some action like with the autographs would have been helpful here too. Or at least let the shooting take place in another hall.
==> If you invite well known actors you have to deal with the waiting crowd.

Was gut war und das hab ich auch von anderen Besuchern gehört und selbst so empfunden, war die Main Stage, die jetzt mehr Sitzplätze hatte und somit auch gut gefüllt alles zu sehen war.
A good thing – and that I’ve heard also from other visitors – was the main stage which had more seats and you definitely had a good view from every seat.

Als Abschluss meines Besuchs in Dortmund gönnte ich mir noch einen Besuch im örtlichen Zoo. In diesem wird derzeit begonnen, die Gehege etc. umzubauen und ich muss sagen: bei manchen ist es wirklich an der Zeit.
Sicher, ich bin durch den Leipziger Zoo etwas verwöhnt, aber in Dortmund ist es wirklich an der Zeit, dass sich einiges ändert. Obwohl ich auch dort schöne Erlebnisse hatte.

For the end of my time in Dortmund I got to visit the Dortmund Zoo. There they started to rebuild some of the enclosures and I have to say: it’s about time.
Sure, I am a little bit spoiled with the Leipzig Zoo, but in Dortmund it is really about time that some things change. Even though I had some nice experiences there.
