~ Worth Fighting For…Love, Loss, and moving forward ~

Nachdem ich schon Patrick Swayze’s Memories gelesen habe, machte ich mich voll Interesse an das Buch seiner langjährigen Ehefrau und Freundin, Lisa Niemi.

Schon das Buchcover ist schön gestaltet und bietet einen Hauch Nostalgie mit der Rückseite, auf der Patrick abgebildet ist.

After reading Patrick Swayze’s memoir „The Time of My Life“ I now finished reading the book of his longtime wife and friend Lisa Niemi.

Even the cover of the book is wonderful and gives a calm insight in the dark days that are still filled with hope and love.

„Till Death do us part.“ That’s what Patrick and I said in our vows when we got married. […] I was eighteen years old, I knew death existed, but it was still a concept, something far, far in the future. So far, that I didn’t have to worry about it.“

Nachdem bei Patrick Krebs entdeckt worden war, gab es schon zu Anfang das ein oder andere Hindernis auf dem Weg zu einer Behandlung. Nachdem die ersten Hürden überwunden waren und die Behandlung angefangen hatte, machten Patrick und Lisa sehr erfreuliche Erfahrungen mit der Produktionsfirma, die seine letzte Serie „The Beast“ produzierten:

After they found out that Patrick had pancreatic cancer there were problems right at the beginning of the treatment. But there were also good moments when Patrick and Lisa told the production company of „The Beast“, Patricks latest series, of his diagnosis:

„They reacted like human beings instead of businesspeople, and they decided to hang in there with Patrick.“ (page 48)

Und auch Patrick selbst wollte um sein Leben kämpfen und sein Wille war ungebrochen:

And Patrick definitely wanted to fight for his life:

„And when the doctors were describing treatments and procedures that would have scared other people witless, Patrick’s reaction was more one of the lively curiosity: ‚Wow, that’s interesting. Let’s see what that does. What do you think, Lisa?‘ It was like he could step outside his body and look at it like an objective observer. He was interested in this fight. And I was equally engaged.“ (page 49)

Mit all den Umstellungen von Medikamenten und Chemotherapie geht auch Lisa durch die verschiedensten Emotionen und kümmert sich rührend um ihren Mann.

With all the changes in medication and chemo also Lisa goes through so much emotion and is caring very lovely for her husband.

The story of these two is becoming a little bit of a struggle – mostly because of the disease – and that’s never put a hold on their love and passion for one another. They loved each other deeply and through this hard time their love grew stronger than before.

Die Geschichte der beiden wird durch diese schwere Erkrankung auf einen Prüfstand gestellt und macht die Liebe und Zuneigung der beiden zueinander nur noch größer.

And with every appointment at the doctors, with every scan there is the fear and the hope, that Patrick’s situation might change for the better – or at least stay the way it is.

Und bei jedem Arzttermin, bei jeder Untersuchung schwingt die Angst und gleichzeitig auch die Hoffnung mit, dass sich Patrick’s Zustand zum besseren ändert – oder zumindest gleich bleibt.

„With no more lesions, no growth of existing lesions, and the PET scan shwong and improvement in the liver, this was confirmation that the chemo was actually working well at controlling the disease. Controlling the disease. As far as pancreatic cancer is concerned, that spells SUCCESS. […]

When we were able to privately catch each other’s eye, it was hard not to be flooded with sparkling emotion. And in his eyes I could see him distinctly say, as if he had said it out loud, ‚Looks like I’m going to be around for a little while longer!'“ (page 80)

Also arbeitet Patrick an seiner Serie „The Beast“ und nach 33 Jahren, die sie verheiratet waren, beschließen die beiden, ihre Ehegelöbnisse zu erneuern – mit Patrick auf seinem Pferd Roh.

So Patrick works on his series „The Beast“ and after being married for 33 years – Lisa and Patrick decided to renew their wedding vows – with Patrick on his horse Roh.

„It was like there was truly magic in the air. Everyone was happy. […] I was standing at the back door ready to make my entrance […] he and Roh, our silvery, blinding-white, brilliant stallion sat off and trotted out and fairly floated around the pool […] and they were breathtaking indeed. He dismounted near the patio when Roh had settled… and held out his hand.

I was smiling ear to ear as I walked forward through the crowd and up to him, taking is hand… And I couldn’t resist. I turned to our guests and grinned, ‚After 33 years, he finally rides up on a white horse!'“ (page 109)

Das war am 13. Juli 2008. That was July 13th, 2008.

Danach ging es auf zu den Dreharbeiten von ‚The Beast‘, wo Lisa wieder einmal Zeuge wurde, wie groß sein Arbeitsethos war und dass sich Patrick bei seinen Projekten immer 110% einsetzte – auch jetzt, obwohl er in der Zeit vorher manchmal nicht so gute Tage hatte.

After that they moved on to the work at „The Beast“ when Lisa was again witnessing how Patrick changed when being at work and being fully committed to a project – even when his last days hadn’t been the best regarding his health.

„From the moment his foot touched down in Chicago, he was like a different man. He went from staying in bed all day to hardly ever going to bed. His enormous burst of energy floored me. I say that he ‚was like a different man‘, but the fact is, he was like his old self, going nonstop, and always the extra mile.“ (page 119)

Doch die Zeiten werden nicht einfacher für Patrick und Lisa und sie beschreibt in „Worth Fighting For“ die verschiedenen Momente, die schwierig waren und sie beide auf eine harte Probe gestellt haben.

But times were not getting easier for Patrick and Lisa and in „Worth Fighting For“ she describes the different moments which were incredibly difficult for both of them.

Umstellung der Medikamente, Probleme mit dem Essen und in der Verdauung sind nur einige der Probleme, dessen eine Auswirkung auch der Verlust seiner Haare ist.

Change of medication, problems with eating and digestion are only some of the problems they were facing as time went on. Another hard point was that Patrick was loosing his hair.

„And he handled all of it the same way he handled his pain and discomfort – with a steady grace, strength and dignity.“ (page 200)

Neben all den gesundheitlichen Auswirkungen, die eine so schwere Krebserkrankung mit sich bringt, fand Patrick trotzdem die Kraft, die Audioversion seines Buches „The Time of My Life“ aufzunehmen, bevor er seinem Körper wieder erlaubte, den Kampf gegen die Krankheit weiterzuführen.

After all the changes in health which came with such a bad disease Patrick still found the time to do the audio-recording for „The Time of My Life“ – before allowing his body to continue the fight for his life.

Es gibt immer wieder Infektionen, die Patricks Körper schwächen und ihm zusetzen und die Ärzte in Alarmbereitschaft versetzen.

There are new infections coming up which weakened his body and got the doctors alarmed.

And then one day, when Patrick was at the hospital for treatment, Lisa heard the words she always feared to hear:

Und eines Tages, als Patrick bereits im Krankenhaus ist, hört Lisa das Unausweichliche:

„And I knew what they were going to say…

‚I’m afraid we’re at that point now,‘ they said gravely and with compassion.

I confirmed with them that, absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt, there was nothing more we could do. […] I didn’t want to start crying and not be able to stop. And I had to agree…

I had to agree…

I had to agree that this was the end.“

(page 278)

Lisa bringt Patrick zurück auf die Ranch, um ihm noch ein wenig Ruhe und vertraute Umgebung zu bieten. Lisa hatte noch nicht die Kraft gefunden, ihrem Liebsten zu sagen, dass er sterben wird – doch wie es scheinbar bei allen Todkranken zu sein scheint – sie wissen es – und Patrick wusste es auch.

Lisa brought Patrick back to their Ranch to give him some quiet time and a loved surrounding. While Lisa hadn’t found the strength to tell her beloved about his situation – but, as maybe it is with all those who are coming near their time to die – they know – and so did Patrick.

„Patrick spoke his last words on Friday evening. […] My last words with Patrick? „I love you.“ And he to me. I never stopped saying it – when I would leave the room, or when I came back into it. And he said it to me until it was only the movement of his lips without sound, and then… only his soft ears that my words would fall on.“ (page 296)

Nach dem Verlust von Patrick begann für Lisa eine schwere Zeit, in der sie nur mit Mühe weiterleben konnte.

After loosing Patrick everything was hard for Lisa and she had a hard time facing being alone without her loved soulmate.

Lisa Niemi ist zwar wieder verheiratet, denkt aber immer noch viel an Patrick, was ihr sicherlich auch die Sympathien seiner Fans bringt. Auf ihrem Blog schreibt sie auch über ihre Gefühlslagen und Emotionen.

Now Lisa Niemi is married again, but still thinks a lot about Patrick which I think his fans are loving. On her blog she is writing about her feelings and emotions.

„Worth Fighting For“ beschreibt den Kampf von Lisa und Patrick um sein Leben aus der Sicht von Lisa und hat einige lustige und einige tief traurige Momente zu bieten. Man spürt die tiefen Gefühle und die Hochs und Tiefs auf ihrem Weg, Patrick ein wenig länger am Leben zu halten und womöglich sogar die Krankheit zu besiegen.

„Worth Fighting For“ shows the fight of Lisa and Patrick for his life from the view of Lisa and has some lighter and some darker moments to dive into. While reading you can feel the love and ups and downs on their way to give Patrick some more time on this earth and maybe beat the disease.

Den Kampf haben sie nicht besiegt, aber Patrick Swayze wird – auch durch diese beiden Bücher – immer im Herzen der Menschen die an ihn denken, ihn gekannt haben und seine Arbeit bewunderten bleiben.

They haven’t beaten the disease, but Patrick Swayze will be – also via these two books – forever in the hearts of the people who are thinking of him, who knew him and who cherished his works.

~ Stefan Kiesbye: „The Staked Plains“ ~

Wer Krimis und Geschichten der besonderen Art mag, wird sich mit den Büchern von Stefan Kiesbye eine Freude machen. Vor einiger Zeit habe ich schon „Hemmersmoor“ gelesen und euch darüber berichtet.

If you like crime stories and stories that have a kind of mystery and shiver in them – you are quite right with the books of Stefan Kiesbye. A while ago I discovered this author by a recommendation of an inspiring human and already told you about his book „Your house is on fire, your children all gone“.

(Note for my english speaking readers: the mentioned article is written only in german; was a time I hadn’t yet decided on writing bilingual articles)

Nun hat mich der Autor selbst angeschrieben und mich gefragt, ob ich sein neuestes Buch, welches im November erscheint, vorab lesen möchte. Natürlich hab ich sofort „Ja“ gesagt und nach einer kleineren Reise von Hawaii aus kam das gute Stück bei mir an.

A short while ago the author himself contacted me and asked if I would be interested in reading his new novel before the official release at the end of November. For sure I said „Yes“ and after a little journey from Hawaii (the publishing house SaddleRoad Press is located there) the small book made its way to my home.

The newest novel of Kiesbye is titled „The Staked Plains“ and is a smart novel which you can easily read and it also has some elements of shiver in it.

Kiesbyes neuestes Werk hört auf den Titel „The Staked Plains“ und ist wieder so ein schöner Roman, den man gut lesen kann und der auch einzelne schauerliche Elemente beinhaltet.

Die Hauptperson in Kiesbye’s Roman ist eine Frau namens Jenny. Ihr Beruf: Sie ist ein Medium. Schon alleine das sorgt für die erste Portion leicht unheimlichen Grusels.

The main character in Stefan Kiesbye’s novel is a woman named Jenny who is a psychic. That fact alone is a little bit scary – and she is not even a very good psychic – at least she thinks so.

„She was a bad psychic when she arrived in Querosa, New Mexico, not because she didn’t possess the powers, but she couldn’t control them. Her husband moved to the small town to teach at the college and she didn’t have anything to persuade him not to. ‚We’ll make it fun,‘ he promised, and after thirty days on the High Plains, the Great Drought began. People seemed friendly.“

Allerdings sieht Jenny nicht so aus, wie man sich ein Medium im allgemeinen vorstellt: sie hat rotes Haar, große Brüste und Sommersprossen. Und sie arbeitet auch nicht wie die meisten ihrer „Zunft“:

But Jenny doesn’t look like you would think a psychic looks like. She has read hair, a well defined chest and freckles. And she doesn’t work like the most psychics would.

„Sometimes Jenny read hands, but it was looking at their feet that told her most about the people coming to her small place on Avenue D.“

Wir lernen als Leser auch Jennys Ehemann kennen – Carl Preston, ein enthusiastischer Mann – in allen Bereichen des Lebens. Beide sind schon seit einer Weile verheiratet und Jenny hat sich mit seinem Wesen abgefunden, obwohl sie sich hin und wieder etwas anderes in ihrem Leben wünscht.

We also get to know the husband of Jenny – Carl Preston. He is a really enthusiastic man in all parts of his life. The couple is married for some years and Jenny has already come to terms with his nature although she now and then wishes for some changes in her life.

While reading we also discover why she is dealing with the feet of her patients and that Jenny is also a very sensitive human who just needs her free time sometimes.

Wir erfahren, warum sie sich lieber mit den Füßen ihrer Patienten beschäftigt und dass sie ein sensibler Mensch ist, der auch mal Pausen braucht.

„No matter how her day went, she made sure to take what she called her sanity-break. She couldn’t stay six or eight hours in her office without going home and returning to herself. […] Her breaks rarely lasted longer than an hour. She didn’t need rest, she needed to remember and recognize her life again.“

(S. 14)

Im Laufe des Buches erfahren wir mehr vom Leben in Querosa und von Jennys Patienten. Von Dingen, die in der Vergangenheit passiert sind und von Dingen, die sie in Querosa nicht mag.

In the book we also get to know more of the life of the people of Querosa and of Jennys patients. We read about things that happened in the past and we here about things Jenny doesn’t like about Querosa.

People are mistaking her skills with some kind of magic or enchantment which is done by witches. One of those people is Helen. She is the second character that is really important for the story. We get to know her family and their problems and I had form the beginning the odd feeling that something isn’t right with this person.

Menschen verwechseln ihre Fähigkeiten mit der Art Magie oder Zauber, den Hexen in ihren Augen anwenden. Und einer dieser Menschen ist auch Helen. Sie ist der zweite Character, der eine tragende Rolle im Buch spielt. Ihre Familie und ihre Probleme werden vorgestellt und ich hatte als Leser gleich das Gefühl: da stimmt irgendetwas nicht.

All of a sudden Jenny gets aches and pain in her stomach. Normally she gets some kind of a strange feeling when something isn’t right with one of her patients – but this time its different…

Plötzlich bekommt Jenny Schmerzen im Bauch. Sie hat sonst immer ein merkwürdiges Gefühl, wenn bei einem ihrer Patienten irgendwas nicht stimmt – aber dieses Mal ist es anders.

„The clinic in town looked like an extended trailer park, and people with serious conditions were flown by helicopter to Texas. She’d heard all the stories about misdiagnoses, botched prescriptions, failed emergency procedures. ‚Don’t get sich here,‘ people had told her more than once, always with the same crooked smile.“

(S. 67)

Doch diese Bauchschmerzen sind nicht die einzige Gefahr, die Jenny droht:

And this pains are not the only thing that threatens Jenny:

„She understood what she hadn’t been able to see before. […] The murder would stay in the family. The land was vast and nobody would know where to start searching for her. She would disappear as though she had drowned in the Pacific.“

(S. 75)

Dann geschieht ein Unfall für den Jenny verantwortlich gemacht wird – und alles wird noch schlimmer für sie. Auch die Verbundenheit zu ihrem Ehemann wird weniger und Jenny ist auf der Suche nach Neuem.

Then an accident is happening and people blame Jenny for it – everything gets kind of worse for her. Also she feels that she is loosing the connection to her husband and so it feels like Jenny is looking for something new.

But one day she has the feeling that she really has helped an ill-fated man.

Is she really capable of healing sick people?

Does she really have these powers?

Dann, eines Tages, hat sie das Gefühl, doch einem kranken Menschen sehr geholfen zu haben. Kann sie doch die Kranken heilen? Hat sie diese Fähigkeiten?

„The Staked Plains“ ist nicht nur ein Buch über eine Frau namens Jenny. Es ist vor allem ein Buch über menschliche und zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen, Wünsche, die Realität und das Leben in einer Landschaft, die von Trockenheit heimgesucht wird.

„The Staked Plains“ is not only a book about a woman named Jenny. It’s a book about humans and interpersonal relations, wishes, the reality and the life in a surrounding thats afflicted by drought.

Es geht um Verzweiflung, Verfolgung und Tod, aber auch um Freundschaften, falsche Hoffnungen und Enttäuschungen.

It’s about desperation, prosecution and death – but also about friendships, false hopes and disappointments.

 

Am Ende lässt „The Staked Plains“ den Leser mit einigen offenen Fragen zurück. Das ist aber in diesem Fall nicht schlimm, sondern vermehrt nur die mysteriöse, schaurige Umgebung des Romans.

In the end „The Staked Plains“ leaves the reader with some questions. In that case its not a bad thing because it strengthens the mysterious and scary surrounding of the novel.

Mich haben folgende Fragen am Ende bewegt:

• Reicht es aus, wenn man sich von seinem früheren Leben lossagt?
• Kann man noch spiritueller sein als Jenny es vielleicht schon ist?

oder ist es ganz anders und

• Sucht Jenny vielleicht sogar ihr Ende?
• Oder ist es einfach eine Art Neuanfang

I was moved by questions like this:

• Is it enough to get away from your former way of life?
• Can you be more spiritual than its the case with Jenny?

Or is everything different and

• Is Jenny maybe looking for an end?
• Or is it just some kind of new-beginning?

~ Emily Barr: „Deine letzte Spur“ / „The Sleeper“ ~

Niemand kann mitten in der Nacht aus einem Zug verschwinden, aber offenbar hatte sie genau das getan. Sie war in Paddington eingestiegen (soweit wir wussten), aber sie war nicht in Truro ausgestiegen.“

Während einer kleinen Pause bei der Lektüre von Sarah Dunants „Der Palast der Borgia“ habe ich mich diesem Kriminalroman/ Psychothriller gewidmet, der mir während meines Kurzaufenthaltes in Berlin in die Hände gefallen ist.

During a short break from reading Sarah Dunants „Blood and Beauty“ I was enjoying my stay in the thriller of Emily Barr which found its way into my hands during my short stay in Berlin this week.

Alles beginnt damit, dass Sam in seinem Haus in Falmouth (Cornwall) auf die Rückkehr seiner Frau aus London wartet. Lara – so ihr Name – pendelt seit kurzem zweimal in der Woche in die britische Hauptstadt, um dort zu arbeiten.

In ihrem Haus in Cornwall aber führen die beiden ein ziemlich zurückgezogenes Leben. Für Sam ist es wie der Himmel auf Erden – für Lara eher nicht.

Everything starts with Sam waiting in his house in Falmouth (Cornwall) for his wife Lara to come home from London. She is travelling twice a week to the british capital to work there.

Back home in Cornwall both of them lead a very quiet life. For Sam this feels like heaven on earth – but not for Lara.

„Am liebsten würde ich schreien, und manchmal tue ich das auch. Gelegentlich schreie ich so laut ich kann, aber niemals, wenn Sam zu Hause ist. […] Er denkt, unsere Liebe sei stabil, […] Er glaubt, dass wir für immer zusammenbleiben werden, hier in Cornwall, Hunderte von Meilen entfernt von unseren schwierigen Familien. Er glaubt wir wären eine Einheit.

Ich wäre lieber Single.“

In den vier Teilen dieses doch recht interessanten Romans erfahren wir ziemlich viel über Lara: wie sie ihren Alltag sieht, wie sie zu ihrem Mann Sam steht, wie es dazu kam, dass sie in London arbeitet,….

Wir erfahren auch, was sie fühlt, als sie sich in den Nachtzug nach London begibt und dort Bekanntschaften schließt.

Kurzum: Lara genießt ihr Arbeitsleben in London, den Trubel der Großstadt und muss sich meistens ziemlich zusammenreißen, wenn es wieder zurück nach Falmouth geht. Ihr Mann Sam lebt allerdings nur für die gemeinsamen Wochenenden – und dann – eines Tages – fährt der Zug in der Kleinstadt ein – und Lara ist nicht unter den Passagieren, die aussteigen!

In the four parts of this quite interesting thriller we get to know some things about Lara: how she sees her life, what she thinks about her life with her husband Sam and what leads her to work in London…

We also get to know how she feels when going on the night train to london and gets to know people there.

Short: Lara loves her work-life in London, the pace of the capital city and she really has to focus when coming back to Falmouth. Her husband Sam is living the whole time for this short weekends – and then – one day – the train arrives – and Lara is not one of the passengers!

„Der Schrei steigt in meiner Kehle hoch. Ich umklammere den Türrahmen, um mich aufrecht zu halten, und starre auf die Szene vor mir, eine Szene, die überhaupt keinen Sinn ergibt.

Der Zug kommt quitschend zum Stehen, und alles wird still.“

Ein Toter wird gefunden – und Lara kannte ihn nicht nur, sie hatte auch ein Verhältnis mit ihm!

Als ihre Freundin Iris (die Freundschaft ist eigentlich noch ziemlich frisch) sich aus ihren eigenen Problemen befreien will, ihren Reisepass sucht – und Sam das Tagebuch seiner Frau findet, tauchen wir ein in die Vergangenheit von Lara.

Lara, die Ehefrau gibt es damals noch nicht – Lara, die Drogenschmugglerin schon eher!

A dead man is found – and Lara not only knew him, she also had an affair with him!

When her new found friend Iris wants to get out of her own problems and is looking for her passport – and Sam finds the diary of his wife – we slowly get to know the past of Lara.

Lara, the wife of Sam doesn’t exist at this time – but Lara, the drug runner does!

Welche Vergangenheit hat Lara? What is the secret of Laras past?

Wie passt ihr jetziges Leben mit der Vergangenheit zusammen? How is her current life relating to her past?

Wieso hat sie ein so schlechtes Verhältnis zu ihrer Schwester Olivia? Why does Lara has such a bad relationship with her sister Olivia?

Weshalb begibt sich ihre neue Freundin Iris auf die Suche nach Lara? Why is Iris going to look for Lara?

Und wie passt ihr Patenonkel Leon in die Geschichte hinein? What’s the matter with Laras godfather Leon?

Diese und andere Fragen werden Stück für Stück beantwortet und führen die Geschichte zu einem interessanten Ende.

These and other questions are answered in „The Sleeper“ and lead to an interesting end.

 

FAZIT / RESULT:

„Deine letzte Spur“ ist interessant aufgebaut, obwohl einem der Hauptcharakter Lara manchmal ein wenig merkwürdig vorkommt. Sie ist so durch ihre Vergangenheit beeinflusst, dass ihre Gegenwart mit Sam da nicht mithalten kann. Sam ist ein eher die Ruhe liebender Mensch, der seine Zeit gern mit Lara verbringt und eigentlich auch nur für sie lebt.

Im Laufe des Romans machen alle Charaktere eine Entwicklung durch und finden sich letztendlich an anderen Plätzen im Leben wieder, als sie zu Anfang gedacht hätten.

„Deine letzte Spur“ lohnt sich, wenn man mal von einer anderen Lektüre abschalten möchte und Abwechslung braucht – auch wenn man sonst nicht der Psychothriller-Fan ist.

„The Sleeper“ is an interesting book despite the fact that the main character Lara seems to be sometimes a little bit crazy. She is affected by her past so her current life doesn’t fit in anymore. Sam is a more quiet character who loves to live his life for his love.

During the novel every character evolves and finds him-/herself at places he or she never thought about.

„The Sleeper“ is a good book when you want to switch off some other book you’re reading – and when you’re normally no thriller-fan.
