~ John Ironmonger: „Der Wal und das Ende der Welt“ ~

Als ich dieses Frühjahr auf der Buchmesse in Leipzig unterwegs war, fiel mir dieses Buch in die Hände. Was mich angezogen hat? Natürlich die ganze Aufmachung des Covers, der interessante und neugierig machende Titel und die Tatsache, dass ich irgendwie das Gefühl hatte, dieses Buch lesen zu müssen.

So, when I was looking around the millions of books present at Leipzig Book Fair earlier this year in Leipzig, this book caught my eye. What made me look closer at it? For sure the way the cover was designed, the title of the book – btw in english it is called „Not Forgetting the Whale“ – and the feeling that I had, that told me to read this book.

Nach dem Lesen hat sich nun herausgestellt: ich weiß nicht, was ich von dem Buch halten soll…

Ist es gut geschrieben, unterhaltsam, hat interessante Charaktere, regt einen zum Nachdenken an, lässt das Kopfkino während des Lesens laufen? All diese Fragen kann ich gut mit „Ja“ beantworten.

Und doch gibt es etwas, was an diesem Buch nicht greifbar ist – und vielleicht ist es gerade das, was es umso interessanter macht.

After I finished reading the book my first thought was: I don’t know what to think about this book…

Is it well written, thoughtful, has interesting characters, makes you think afterwards about a lot of topics, has your mind show you scenes while reading? The answer to all of those questions is a big „yes“.

But there is something about the book which is not within reach for anyone – and maybe that is the most fascinating thing about it.

Das Kurzzitat der Elle zum Buch lautet: „Dieses Buch gibt einem den Glauben an die Menschheit zurück.“ (Zitat Buchrücken deutsche Ausgabe).

Nun – dem kann ich nur bedingt zustimmen. Einerseits hat es einen positiven Ausgang, trotz der drohenden Katastrophe, die sich auftürmt. Und ja, man möchte daran denken und glauben, dass – sollte so etwas in Realität und größerem Ausmaß stattfinden – die Menschen so reagieren wie die Titelfigur Joe Haak und die Bewohner von St. Piran. Doch beim Lesen konnte ich den Gedanken nicht abschütteln, dass die Realität in Folge eines solchen Vorfalls doch gravierend anders aussehen würde. Vielleicht nicht in kleineren Ortschaften wie St. Piran, wo das Leben doch noch einen anderen Rhythmus hat als in den Großstädten. Doch im Allgemeinen gibt es, denke ich, genug Individuen, die – trotz aller Bemühungen, positiv zu bleiben und den Gemeinschaftssinn zu pflegen – in der Lage sind, das Negativste im Menschen hervorzurufen und zu befeuern.

ELLE UK commented on this book: „This novel, set in Cornwall, will restore your faith in humanity.“

So – I can go with that only for a short while. One thing: yes, it has a positive ending although catastrophe lurking around the edges and becoming stronger. And yes, one wants to think and believe, that – should such a thing happen in reality and to a bigger extent – humans would react the way Joe Haak, the main human character, and the people of St. Piran did. But while reading I couldn’t lose the thought and the feeling, that reality in the aftermath of such an incident would be much different from the version in the book. Maybe not in smaller villages like St. Piran, where life has another rhythm to it and people are more dependent and living another life than in the bigger cities. But in general – I think – there are enough individuals, who – despite all efforts to stay positive and live for community – are capable of getting the worst out of human nature and fuel negativity.

Alles in allem kann ich festhalten: „Der Wal und das Ende der Welt“ ist ein gutes und interessantes Buch, definitiv nicht in dystopischen Gedanken wandelnd – und schon deshalb auf Grund dieser Gratwanderung erwähnenswert.

Vielleicht lese ich es zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt noch einmal und werde sehen, ob sich mein erster Eindruck geändert hat.

In den Medien ist das Buch auf jeden Fall angekommen. Beiträge gibt es u.a. hier, hier und hier.

Als Lesestoff kann ich es weiterempfehlen und würde gern eure Meinung hören.

So after all I can tell you: „Not forgetting the Whale“ is a good and interesting book to read and get lost in – definitely not dystopian – and also because of that balancing act worth a closer look.

Maybe I will read it again at another time and will see, how my first impressions will change.

I can definitely recommend this book for a reading session and am definitely interested in your thoughts.
