Hilarie Burton Morgan: „The Rural Diaries“ – it’s all about compassion, empathy and the will to change

„First of all, you don’t know me.

Second of all, you don’t know me.“

Any of you One Tree Hill Fans out there will definitely know these words spoken by one of our favorite characters, Peyton Sawyer.

With that comes the question: When do we really know one person?

I am not silly to think that 100% knowledge about one person exists, but it is always great to get to know and understand a fellow human who inspires you and who is a good influence in your life a little bit better.

So here comes: The Rural Diaries

Have you ever felt really invited into someone’s life without feeling awkward about it?

Hilarie Burton Morgan has been a positive influence and inspiration to me for a long time – not just because she is one hell of an actress (f.e. she worked on Lethal Weapon, Forever, White Collar – just to name a few), who has found her women empowerment roles in christmas movies, but because she is walking the walk of doing good things for her community, encouraging others to do the same and changing her life when she needed it the most. Now she is happily married to Jeffrey Dean Morgan, loves her two children, Gus and George, dearly and is a farm lady who is just is as tough as they come with a heart of gold.

„Love is like farm work. It requires consistency, and imagination. Your body will ache and you will be fatigued, but there is no greater reward than seeing the fruits of your labor.“

When I first heard about Hilarie writing a book, I was definitely in for pre-ordering it. There was just no other way. Then, when the time of the book-release came closer I was really excited, because not only was a convention planned in May in Paris with Hilarie attending, it was also the weekend before the official release date – and my hopes were high that she would bring copies to sign.

In the times leading to this, the Corona virus hit the world – and the convention was postponed. So I really couldn’t be more excited when Hilarie announced that she would partner with her community bookstore, Oblong Books and Music, to send out signed copies of „The Rural Diaries“. It was a natural thing to order and to support small shops who were having a hard time during the lockdown.

Only two days apart the copies arrived – one pre-ordered book and one signed copy from Oblong Books and Music in Rhinebeck.

Since I was so looking forward to reading her story and getting to know her a little bit more, a few days earlier I purchased the audiobook – and it was just as amazing as I thought. On my way to work and back home I listened to Hilarie telling me about key moments in her life, from loosing a good friend during the war in Iraq to meeting Jeffrey Dean Morgan, to getting pregnant the first time with Gus and feeling lonely in Los Angeles to battling depression after her first miscarriage to finally becoming a mom to sweet George and marrying Jeffrey in 2019.

The most wonderful thing about this audiobook: you can hear every emotion Hilarie wants to share, the good, the bad, the funny and the ones that nearly make you cry.

„The next morning Jeff made coffee and we opened gifts. Gus tore into his presents, and then I got up to make breakfast, feeling the letdown of a holiday ending.

‚Hold on, there is something in the tree,‘ Jeffrey said.

I looked and there was a white envelope that read „Hilarie“. I opened it up, thinking it was a gift certificate. But inside was a piece of paper that read „Morgan“

I turned around, and Jeffrey was down on one knee with the ring.“

All these moments play a vital part in Hilarie becoming the wonderful human she is today – and in her book she also shares her stories of failure and how it is good and healthy to embrace these moments, learn from them and go on in your life being stronger and more self conscious than ever.

For the food-lovers – there are some great receipes in „The Rural Diaries“, which are on my list to try out some time soon. Also Hilarie shares her insights and learnings about being a farm lady and caring for ducks, cows and alpaca.

„Sunny walked me through how to give them their deworming shots once a month, and I went to school on alpacas. I learned that, thankfully, they are the least-high-maintenance animals on the planet.“

If you are like me and are interested in reading reviews before you order a book – you probably won’t find anything negative while doing your research – because there just isn’t.

„The Rural Diaries“ is just that – honest words about a life lived through changes, through challenges, through dark days and losses but always with a heart full of longing and hoping and fighting for better days.

„I’m sorry,“ he said.

Jeffrey had finally seen me. We talked about our grief. We talked about how we both felt like failures. We talked about how lonely we were.

Suddenly, with his hands in his pockets, Jeffrey was a different person. He was incredibly vulnerable. He talked to me about how much he valued me and that this was home and that it was worth any fight.

And as we talked, he started helping me. He stood and went to get a whole bunch of rocks, laying pathways through the garden for me. Each path was a manifestation of what he was saying.

We worked on this garden together.“

„The Rural Diaries“ is not just about family moments, its also about life-changing and positive moments regarding work: Hilarie tells about her work with organisations like Astor Services for Children and Families, which is a treatment center for children with behavioral issues. Becoming involved with renovating the floors and working for the well-being of the children not only helped her personally but also brought her and Jeffrey closer together.

„Jeff started doing a lot of press with me to promote Astor. […] He’s incredible generous with himself. So when he’s home, that’s his time to recuperate.

Watching him use his reserves to promote Astor made me fall in love with him all over. He knew it was important to me, so it became important to him. Jeffrey had shown up, and I knew that meant we were going to push through the shitty stuff together and keep going.

From that moment on, we were stronger than we’d ever been. In working for others, we found ourselves again.“

Another important part of her life is Samuel’s Sweet Shop and in telling how they met Ira Gutner, to mourning his sudden death which then leads to buying the sweet shop to save it – it’s also another story filled with love, compassion and the will to work and help when others are in need to be saved.

There is so much more I could say about this diamond of a book – but I really would like to encourage you to read it and to see for yourself – or hear, if you prefer the audiobook, which is a real treat. (And with that coming from me, who is not a big fan of audiobooks in general, you could definitely trust my words with that one.)

And – if you ever feel stuck in life, I would like to share a saying of Hilarie’s father, that is an important one in every aspect of living: „The Want-To creates the How-To“ – or as Hilarie has put it in words a while ago: If you want something bad enough, you will find a way to make it happen. If not, it just wasn’t the right thing for you.

So – I really hope you will read this book and hopefully it will enrich your life in many aspects.

„All the lessons we’d gathered from living here, from buying Samuel’s, from engaging with our neighbors and celebrating their talents – we wanted to share that.

The same way I had been inspired by other people’s stories when I was low, I wanted to pay it forward and continue to message:

Try. The want-to creates the how-to.

~ Verfrühtes Weihnachten in Paris / When Christmas comes early in Paris ~

Paris zu besichtigen ist ja schon für viele Menschen ein großer Traum – im Sommer sicherlich schöner als bei den jetzigen Temperaturen. Ich hatte allerdings noch einen weiteren Grund, die französische Hauptstadt zu besuchen: eine Convention.

Mein Weihnachten kam also dieses Jahr etwas zeitiger und es war eines, auf das ich schon lange gewartet habe.

Visiting Paris is something a lot of people long for – probably more beautiful in summer than in winter times. My reasons for flying to the french capital were other than strolling through the streets: a convention.

So my christmas came early this year and it was one I waited for a longer time.

Natürlich habe ich auch einen Spaziergang durch Paris unternommen – ohne Regen, aber bei starker Bewölkung, die jederzeit in Regen umschlagen konnte. Ich blieb verschont und habe mir u.a. den Außenbereich des Louvre angeschaut, die Tuileriengärten durchstreift und auf dem Place de Concorde die Springbrunnen bewundert.

So for sure I went to a stroll through the city – not as long as it would have been in summer times – and without rain, but it was really cloudy, so the rain was always in my mind. I took a long look at the outer spaces of Louvre, strolled through the Jardin des Tuileries and wandered around the Place de Concorde with its lovely fountains. Although no water in them right now, definitely worth a visit.

Da ich auch ein wenig Glück mit dem Wetter hatte, zeigte sich auch die Sonne zeitweise und so genoß ich die Sonnenstrahlen in den Gärten und am Louvre, bevor ich dann die für viele Menschen schönste Brücke in Paris überquerte: die Brücke Pont Alexandre III. Schon am Tag sehenswert, kann ich mir gut vorstellen, dass sie bei Nacht und Beleuchtung noch beeindruckender ist. Also – noch ein Grund mehr, Paris einen weiteren Besuch abzustatten.

So since I had some luck with the weather I got some sunny spells during the morning and I really loved relaxing in the sun while strolling the Jardin des Tuileries, wandering around the outside of the Louvre before visiting the – for many people – most beautiful bridge in Paris: the Pont Alexandre III. It is really lovely in the daytime, so I definitely think that it must look amazing by night and with the lights on. So – another reason for visiting the french capital again.

Mein vorrangiger Grund für den Besuch in Paris war eine Convention mit dem Namen „123 Ravens“, organisiert von Empire Conventions.

„One Tree Hill“ (OTH) gehört schon seit ewigen Zeiten zu meinen absoluten Lieblingsserien – und das hat mehrere Gründe. OTH ist nicht einfach nur eine Serie, die man – wie manche – so nebenbei schaut und sich berieseln lässt. OTH ist eine Serie mit Seele. Und daran haben maßgeblich die Schauspieler Anteil, die den Charakteren Leben verleihen. Schon seit einiger Zeit wollte ich eine Convention der Serie besuchen und die Schauspieler persönlich kennenlernen.

So my main reason for visiting Paris was a convention with the name „123 Ravens“, organised by Empire Conventions.

„One Tree Hill“ (OTH) has now for a long time been one of my absolute favorites when it comes to series in television. And that for many reasons. OTH is not only a series that you watch – just while it’s on – and let yourself get lost in it. OTH is a series with heart and soul. And that is mainly because of the wonderful actors who brought these characters to life. For a long time I wanted to be present at a convention for this series and meet the actors in person.

Die Veranstalter haben großartige Arbeit geleistet, die Convention im Hyatt Regency Etoile verlief wunderbar und war – soweit ich das aus den diversen Social Media Kanälen verfolgen kann – für alle Beteiligten ein voller Erfolg.

Für mich war es die erste Convention einer Serie – in diesem Zusammenhang zählt die Dortmund Comic Con nicht – und auch ich war einfach nur begeistert.

Es ist schon eine schöne Erfahrung, wenn man die Schauspieler, die man von der Serie kennt, auch im echten Leben trifft, sich mit ihnen unterhalten kann und die ganze positive Energie spürt, die sowohl während der Autogrammzeiten, als auch bei Photoshoots und Panels in der Luft liegt.

The organisers did a wonderful job and the convention at the Hyatt Regency Etoile was amazing and – as far as I can tell by looking at some social media channels – for everyone involved a big success.

For me this was the first convention for a series – meaning that Dortmund Comic Con doesn’t count in that field – and – as others – I was totally thrilled by everything.

It is such a wonderful and special experience to meet the actors – that you only know from the series and your tv – in real life, talk to them and feel the whole positive energy floating around the rooms, may it be during autograph times, photoshoots or at the panels.

Diese schönen Erinnerungen werden mich noch eine ganze Weile begleiten und ich bin definitiv bei der nächsten One Tree Hill-Convention dabei.

These wonderful memories will stay with me for a long while and I am sure I will be in for the next One Tree Hill convention.

Chad Michael Murray „The Weight of a Single Stone“

Chad Michael Murray ist nicht nur Schauspieler (One Tree Hill, Freaky Friday, Cinderella Story) sondern auch Autor. Seine Graphic Novel „Everlast“ habe ich bereits vor einiger Zeit vorgestellt.

Pünktlich zu Weihnachten hat der junge Autor nun eine Kurzgeschichte veröffentlicht, die mit gut beschriebenen Charakteren und einer interessanten Geschichte mit ungeahnter Wendung aufwartet.

„The Weight of a Single Stone“ fängt ruhig an und erzählt die Geschichte zweier Brüder.

Wir begegnen zunächst Tin-Tin und Johnny – zwei Jungs im Alter von 8 und 10 Jahren. Sie tun, was alle abenteuerlustigen Jungs in dem Alter tun, die in der Nähe eines Waldes wohnen – sie begeben sich auf Abenteuersuche – und werden fündig.

„`Wow, a knife!´ exclaimed the younger boy, who was crouched right behind him. Johnny was two years younger with blond hair and big brown eyes, and Tin-Tin liked to think of him as his sidekick.“

Hier teilt sich der Erzählstrang und wir lernen Martin kennen – einen 40-jährigen Mann, der schon viel im Leben durchgemacht hat. Er ist ein heruntergekommener Mann, der Fehler im Leben begangen hat und vieles bereut.

„Martin was the type of man who pondered life’s every beat and analyzed the outcome of each scenario. Most people would say Martin was a bum. […] the type that seems to take moments of opportunity and turn them into disasters.“

Dann erhält Martin einen überraschenden Anruf von einem Anwalt, Gerald Hemingway, der ihn darüber in Kenntnis setzt, dass seine Mutter gestorben ist.

Während Martin sich mit dem Anwalt trifft und die Angelegenheiten bespricht schwenkt die Geschichte über zu den zwei Jungs, die wir zuerst im Wald getroffen haben. Sie sind immernoch dort und ritzen ihre Initialen in einen Baum. Später versuchen sie sich im Messerwerfen…

„The very instant the knife left his hand, he knew the throw was off. His eyes widened, as…“

Diese nur 17 Seiten umfassende Geschichte gibt uns einen Einblick in ein Leben, dass lange Jahre geprägt war von Schuldgefühlen und Selbstvorwürfen.

Martin hat ein Haus geerbt, in dem er einen Neuanfang wagen will, nachdem er seiner Mutter lange Zeit fernblieb und auch sonst keinerlei Familienanschluss zu haben scheint. Allerdings weiss das Haus – und der Brief, den seine Mutter ihm hinterlassen hat – mehr über ihn, als ihm zunächst bewusst ist.

Was hat ein Stein mit dem Seelenheil von Martin zu tun?

Was ist mit Tin-Tin und Johnny geschehen?

Wird sich Martin am Ende von seinen Schuldgefühlen befreien können?

Wo besteht die Verbindung zwischen beiden Erzählsträngen?

Chad Michael Murray hat mit dieser Geschichte wieder einmal bewiesen, dass er ein guter Erzähler ist und mit Worten umzugehen weiß.

Man kann sich als Leser „The Weight of a Single Stone“ auch wunderbar als Kurzfilm vorstellen, sind die Charaktere doch eindringlich gezeichnet und mit Stärken und Schwächen behaftet, die sie sehr menschlich erscheinen lassen.

Alles in allem ein Lesetipp nicht nur für Fans des Schauspielers und Autors, sondern auch für Liebhaber von Kurzgeschichten.

~ Neuer Artikel von Bethany Joy Lenz und die Vorfreude auf ihr Album ~

Bethany Joy Lenz hat auf ihrem Blog wieder einen sehr interessanten und immer wieder aktuellen Artikel veröffentlicht.

Und:

Die Vorfreude auf ihr Album „Your Woman“ nimmt zu, da sie über Gespräche auf ihrem Twitteraccount mitgeteilt hat, ihr Album diese Woche zugänglich zu machen.

Natürlich lassen ihre Fans und Liebhaber ihrer Musik ihr alle Zeit der Welt, da sie auch neben der Musik noch ein Leben hat, dass sich vorrangig um ihre Tochter Maria dreht.

Sobald das Album veröffenlicht wurde und sich bei mir befindet, werde ich sicher noch einige Worte dazu verlieren.

Entscheidungen…“Leben oder Tod – du hast die Wahl“…

Ihr kennt bestimmt den Film „The Box“ mit Cameron Diaz und James Marsden in den Hauptrollen.

Dieser Film mit dem etwas perfiden Inhalt rund um eine Box mit einem roten Knopf hat mich damals sehr interessiert – und nun gibt es eine ähnlich aufgebaute Serie.

Auf „Chosen“ aufmerksam geworden bin ich durch den Schauspieler Chad Michael Murray (Lucas Scott in „One Tree Hill“, Autor von „Everlast“), der in der zweiten Staffel eine Rolle namens Jacob Orr verkörpert.

Schon in der ersten Staffel ist Hauptdarsteller Milo Ventimiglia (bekannt als Jess in „Gilmore Girls“) in ein Spiel um Leben und Tod verwickelt. Ein Interview mit dem Schauspieler findet ihr hier.

Mal ehrlich: Was würdet ihr tun, wenn ihr eine kleine Kiste mit einem Foto, einer Pistole und der Anweisung finden würdet, die Person auf dem Foto innerhalb von 3 Tagen zu eliminieren. Dann werdet ihr auch noch beschossen und eine für euch fremde Person versucht ,euch zu töten.

„Chosen“ besteht in der ersten Staffel aus 6 kurzen Episoden mit einer Länge von je 23 Minuten, was die Rezeption dieser Serie sicherlich spannend macht.

Welchen Eindruck habt ihr vom Trailer?

Jana Kramer: „Jana Kramer“ – wenn Schauspieler singen… :-)

Wenn Schauspieler singen kann das ja entweder ein voller Erfolg werden, oder total nach hinten losgehen…

Momentan fallen mir nur positive Beispiele ein (Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Lindsay Lohan, Beverley Mitchell,…), was auch für diesen Blogeintrag gut ist, ist doch Jana Kramer auch ein sehr positives Beispiel dafür, was herauskommen kann, wenn sich schauspielerisch Tätige ans Mikrofon wagen.

Geboren wurde Jana Kramer 1983 und ist vielleicht den ein oder anderen von ihren Darstellungen in den verschiedenen Serien bekannt. Meine Wenigkeit bezieht sich hierbei vorallem auf ihre Rolle als Alex Dupre in „One Tree Hill“, die sie sehr sympathisch verkörpert – ein starker Charakter mit Höhen und Tiefen.

Anfang 2011 wagte sich Jana Kramer in die Musikwelt und veröffentlichte ihre erste Single und bald darauf folgte ihr erstes Album mit dem naheliegenden Titel „Jana Kramer“.

Wer der Aktrice und Sängerin auf den diversen Internetwegen folgen möchte, sie hat eine eigene Website (auf der man die Songs u.a. probehören kann), sie twittert und hat eine Facebookpage.

Jana Kramer hat sich mit ihrem ersten Album einen guten Start ins Musikbusiness geschaffen, ist doch von allem etwas auf dieser CD vorhanden. Hauptsächlich mit einem countrylastigen Grundton, was jedoch keinesfalls als negativ zu werten ist.

Ihre Lieder haben Rhythmus, sind einen positiven Beat und deutliche Aussagen. Ob es nun um Liebe geht; den Wunsch, der Ex möge doch mit seinem Date im Regen stehen und eine Anklage an sich ewig entschuldigende Männer und die Lossagung von denjenigen – Jana Kramer hat mit diesem Album richtig gute Arbeit geleistet und es ist zu hoffen, dass noch mehr gute Songs in ihr stecken und zum Vorschein kommen.
